Top 5 Causes of AC Problems

Below are five of the most common causes of AC problems. If you experience any of them, know that you can call us at any time to assist you with any type of AC repair.

Dirty Filters

Clean filters prevent unnecessary wear and tear on your HVAC system and prevent it from functioning efficiently. They not only extend the life of your heating and cooling system, but also let you save on your monthly utility bills since an effective HVAC system uses less energy for optimal functioning. Remember to clean your permanent filters at least once a month during times of heavy use. Some disposable filters need to be changed every month, while others can last much longer. Check your filters regularly to help maintain your HVAC system in good working order.

Broken Thermostat

If you’re experiencing uneven heating or cooling in your house, the culprit behind this could be a malfunctioning thermostat. The thermostat is the device that senses the room temperature and sends a signal to the furnace or AC to turn on or off once the desired temperature is reached. If it’s broken, your HVAC system could be turning on and off at random, resulting in an uncomfortable indoor environment.

Improperly Balanced Dampers

You could have a problem with your system’s dampers if some rooms in your house cool or heat faster than others. Unbalanced dampers reduce the airflow to one line while doubling the airflow to another. Finding the right balance means each room of your house gets the right amount of treated air, making the rooms in your house equably comfortable.

Insufficient Refrigerant

Your AC unit cools the air in your house with a liquid refrigerant. If there is a leak in your condenser unit, a certain amount of refrigerant escapes. What is left in the condenser unit may not be sufficient to cool the air it treats. This results not only in a hot house, but also in an overworked condenser, which can lead to even bigger problems if left unchecked.

Tripped Breaker Switch

If your HVAC system suddenly won’t turn on for any apparent reason, check your circuit breakers. The designated switch could have just tripped by accident. Keep in mind, however, that breakers don’t trip without an underlying reason. If this keeps happening, have your circuit panel checked by a licensed electrician.
